Halton Marine delivers cabin ventilation system to Carnival Breeze


Carnival Breeze, currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, will be Carnival Cruise Lines’ third Dream class ship. This magnificent cruise ship is scheduled to enter service in June 2012.

Carnival Breeze will utilize Halton Marine’s state-of-the-art cabin ventilation system. The airflow is controlled and maintained individually in each cabin and thus sound levels are maintained as low and comfortable as possible. Airflow and temperature are continuously measured by intelligent automation technology. The new generation of cabin unit actuators guarantee a silent, fast and accurate airflow adjustment.

According to Halton Marine, Carnival Breeze is believed to be the first major cruise ship built in Italy that will utilize an Ethernet network for cabin ventilation. Connecting Halton Marine cabin units to a network offers many advantages, such as substantial savings in energy consumption, the possibility to control, monitor and adjust cabin indoor climate centralized via network, improved passenger comfort and less time spent troubleshooting.

Local and advanced energy efficiency
Carnival Breeze will utilize both local and advanced energy efficiency solutions with regard to cabin ventilation.

In local energy efficiency solution, the air-conditioning is forced into standby mode when the passenger removes the keycard from its holder. Even though unnecessary cooling and heating is limited while the cabin is not occupied, the indoor climate conditions are simply maintained at a comfortable level. The individual comfort level is quickly re-established when the passenger returns to the cabin. If the passenger opens the balcony door, the cabin unit damper closes to minimum, preventing any unnecessary cooling. With the local technology, it is possible to achieve savings up to 8% * in cabin HVAC energy consumption. Unlike the advanced system, the local solution for energy efficiency does not require a network..

Halton Marine advanced energy efficiency solution for cabin ventilation can save up to 35% * in cabin energy consumption.  

In the case of Carnival Breeze, the advanced energy efficiency means active operation between the Air Handling Unit (AHU) and Halton Marine cabin units. Data from the terminal units is collected and calculated to control the AHU’s fan speed.
Halton cabin units for Carnival Breeze are managed through a network with PC software (SCADA) or locally by using a PDA. Touch screens that manage the advanced energy-efficiency solution, system by system, are located at AC stations. Touch screens are also used in the commissioning, operation and fine-tuning phases.

The 130,000-ton cruise ship Carnival Breeze will be the 24th vessel in Carnival Cruise Lines’ fleet, and it will operate 12-day Mediterranean voyages from Barcelona through October 2012 then launch year-round six and eight day Caribbean cruises from Miami in November 2012.
