April 11, 2008 Halton Marine After Sales services retrofits UV-light technology on board MSC MusicaHalton Marine After Sales services retrofitted UV-light technology on board MSC Musica during its prescheduled dry-docking period in February. MSC Musica is the 89,000-ton cruise ship owned by MSC Cruises. With the total length of 298 meters this sophisticated ship was dry-docked for servicing period in Union Naval Marseille’s dry-dock in France, that has a capability to dry-dock ships of 250-350 meters. During the dry-docking period, Halton Marine After Sales services were able to equip 50 galley hoods with UV-light technology in the ship’s main galleys, cafeteria and crew galley within 12 days. “I’m very pleased that the customer chose to upgrade the galley hoods with the latest technology”, says Tuomas Lilleberg, Manager of Halton Marine’s After Sales services. “I believe that the results we have received from previous retrofit installations speak for themselves and therefore convinced the customer of the benefits of the UV-system”, continues Lilleberg. Halton Marine galley hoods with UV-light technology, keep the galley ducts substantially cleaner than any other traditional system, which results not only in improved hygienic conditions but also in direct savings in duct cleaning costs and maintenance times. At the same time the risk of fire spreading into ductwork substantially decreases. Fire used in cooking, and accumulation of grease particles can create an environment that is more vulnerable to possible fire risk than others. In case of fire, grease accumulated in galley hoods and ductwork, can easily operate as propellant spreading the fire to ventilation ducts. UV-light technology is the most efficient on the market for grease filtration. The retrofit installation work on board MSC Musica was carried out successfully. “I feel that the total execution of the retrofit installation was carried smoothly. We were able to get on board as scheduled, we got the work done on time, and the co-operation between different teams aboard ship was easy. Naturally the customer is pleased that the ship has now a new upgraded system in operation”, says Tuomas Lilleberg.
